Abstract
The text reflects on the cultural practices of the black population in São Paulo in the first half of the twentieth century and its relations with the official institutions of the city. It presents soccer as a sphere of knowledge, belonging and construction of subjectivity. When presenting diasporic links in Brazilian modernity and its contradictions, it also dwells in the congo-angola worldview present in the bodies and languages of communities, in black masculinity and its absorption by the independent black press of the same period.
