ARISTIDES MALTEZ HOSPITAL AND THE DETECTION OF UTERINE CERVICAL CANCER CAMPAIGNS IN THE INTERIOR OF BAHIA

Abstract
The Aristides Maltez Hospital was opened in 1952 in Salvador city (Bahia), as a philanthropic institution belonging to the à Liga Baiana Contra o Câncer (Bahian League Against Cancer). Specializing center in treatment of various types of cancer, the hospital cared for priority to female cancers, especially uterine cervical cancer. The institution became a reference in disease control actions in Northeastern Brazil. The purpose of this article is to analyze the organization of the Hospital as a space for diagnosis and treatment of uterine cervical cancer and the implementation process of early diagnosis campaigns in municipalities of Bahia's interior. These campaigns, from 1960s, responded to the new detection model, based on a proposed of assistance a larger number of women using cytology (Pap test).
