Abstract
This article seeks to rediscuss the import of the concept of environmental racism from the North American reality to the Brazilian social context as well as reflect on the category of race in Brazil. From this, seeks to present a context of environmental conflict in Santa Cruz, West side of Rio de Janeiro, to illustrate social, economic and racial characteristics of a city neighborhood that condition the implementation of a steel mill, industrial enterprise harmful to the environment and the health of the local population.
