THE DOCTOR STELA MEDEIROS AND THE BGG’S RESEARCH IN BAHIA

Abstract
This article discusses the contribution of medical Stela Medeiros, with regard to the BCG’s survey in Bahia. This researcher worked at the Brazilian Institute for Tuberculosis Research (IBIT), an institution created in the Salvador city, in 1937. BCG vaccination was an important and controversial subject, at a time when tuberculosis was configured a disease of high incidence and mortality in several cities in Brazil and the world. Stela Medeiros was part of the defender group the oral BCG, connected to medical Arlindo de Assis, in contrast to the defender group of the intradermal BCG. Her performance features elements to consider not only the aspects related to the Tysiology constitution while specialty, but also indicates lanes to discuss gender issues, after all the research in biomedicine were predominantly performed by men. She joined a center of women who managed autonomy through their work, establishing themselves professionally.
