PORTELA’S “SUPPORTIVE EAGLE”: ATTENTION TO FAMILIES IN THE MIDST OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC IN A SUBURB OF RIO DE JANEIRO
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Portela samba school recreative society has historically developed social actions among its various members, as members, fans, leaders, volunteers and members mobilizing efforts in solidarity with the most vulnerable social sectors of the population. With the humanitarian emergency imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, which broke out in 2020, the Portelense group mobilized itself in the form of a campaign called “Supportive Eagle” in order to carry out work on the distribution of food and protection to impoverished sectors, of black majority and in conditions of vulnerability and social injustice, residents of the neighborhoods of Oswaldo Cruz, Madureira and surroundings. This article proposes to reflect on the “Supportive Eagle” campaign as materiality possible thanks to the Samba School as an important locus of the task force (SANTOS, 2014) from the organizational repertoire of Portela and as a legacy of a representative community institution of the impoverished layers that surround it, supporting the low-income population and invisible social groups, often constituting one of the only sources of assistance to this population in the face of state neglect.
