COLLECTIVE MEMORY IN A RURAL BLACK COMMUNITY FROM THE SOUTH OF THE BRAZIL

Abstract
This article discusses collective memory as an essential element of the process of maroon self-identification as a rural black community of the South of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. From ethnographic and historical data, its articulates a discussion on the theme of collective memory, emphasizing the figure of the ladies owners of slaves who originated that black territory through “leaves” of land and a possible negotiation process of the former slaves with their ladies, in the search for greater autonomy for the blacks during slavery.
