FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE RACIAL DISPARITIES IN HEALTH: IMPACT OF HISTORICAL TRAUMA, SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND RACISM ON HEALTH

Abstract
Recognizing and overcoming health disparities are major public health challenges to building a more just and equal world. This paper is the result of an academic exchange experience at the University of North Carolina (USA). The aim of this paper is to describe some of the main theoretical approaches used in research on health disparities in the U.S. We performed a literature research using the following electronic databases: MEDLINE, Web of Science (ISI) and GOOGLE SCHOLAR. We selected scientific articles published between years of 1990 and 2010, using the following keywords: Historical trauma, SES (socioeconomic status), life course and racism. The different approaches used in studies in public health point to the important contribution of historical, environmental, socioeconomic and ideological factors, among them racism and discrimination, for the generation and maintenance of racial disparities in health.
