EDUCATION, INEQUALITY AND DIVERSITY: THE DISADVANTAGED GROUPS IN RELATION TO THE BRAZILIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the social and cultural inequalities that exist in the Brazilian educational system, focusing on the difficulties of access and retention of disadvantaged groups and historically discriminated, like the population of African descent, to public, democratic and quality education. We understand that the education offered to these groups in Brazil does not meet their demands, needs and interests; neither does it offer the minimum necessary so that the people of these groups fully develop – intellectually, socially and professionally. In recent years, some educational policies have been created by the State in order to minimize the inequalities in the Brazilian school system; however, there is still a great deal of resistance from school to put them into practice. There is still a lot to progress so these policies take effect. The struggle is old, and the results are already notorious.
