Abstract

This article examines the field of black women’s studies in Brazil and the United States.  The analysis focuses on the rise of this field in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s and discusses the possibility of strengthening the development of this field of study in Brazil.  Due to the increase in the number of black female students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Brazil in recent years, the author argues for the importance of focusing on the relationship between race and gender in the Brazilian academy.
