Abstract
Uma das primeiras pessoas assassinadas em nosso país foi uma rainha. Seu nome era Anacaona e ela era uma índia Arawak. Ela era poeta, dançarina e pintora, também. Ela governava a parte oeste de uma ilha tão exuberante e verde que os Arawaks a chamavam de Ayiti, terra de grandeza. Quando os espanhóis chegaram pelo mar à procura de ouro, Anacaona foi uma de suas primeiras vítimas. Ela foi estuprada e morta e sua aldeia foi saqueada. A terra de Anacaona é agora frequentemente chamada de o país mais pobre do hemisfério ocidental, um lugar de contínua conturbação política. Assim sendo, para alguns, é fácil esquecer que esta nação foi a primeira república negra, terra dos primeiros afrodescendentes a extirparem a escravidão e a criarem uma nação independente, em 1804.
