Abstract
Cecília Soares, em seu livro, traz a figura da mulher negra enquanto sujeito histórico que compunha a trama das relações sociais no período oitocentista do Brasil. Retrata a atuação da mulher negra trabalhadora livre, liberta ou escrava, em diversos setores da economia. Dessa forma, dentro ou fora do ambiente da casa, as mulheres negras assumiam papéis sociais extremamente relevantes em um contexto permeado de problemas sociais, econômicos e políticos. Entre os destaques da mão de obra negra feminina, encontram-se o trabalho doméstico e o trabalho de ganho, realizado fora do ambiente domiciliar.
