Abstract

This study analyzes the health situation, vulnerabilities and social risks for the black teenagers who live in Governador Valadares (MG), in the period from 2000 to 2011. This is a descriptive and exploratory study based on the Hospital Morbidity information made available through the records of the Hospital Information System of the Unified Healthcare System (SIH-SUS), and data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) of the Brazilian Health Ministry. The data collected on the incidence of hospitalizations and deaths was by cause, according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD Chapter 10), and by age (10 to 19 years old). The SIM and SIH tables ‒ TabWin ‒ 3.0 version, were used for data processing. The set of Vital Statistics for Governador Valadares is characterized by the prevalence of black teenagers, subject to morbidity and mortality risks due to external causes or precautious pregnancy (planned and/or unplanned), responsible for disrupting a social mobility trend and giving rise to a new cycle of family poverty.
