Abstract

This article aims to analyze the female protagonism during the abolitionist campaign in the second half of the nineteenth century, in some Brazilian provinces, through the societies, clubs and abolitionists associations. Although the historiography refers to men the merit for the success of the abolitionist movement, this work intends to show that many women also acted on behalf of captives. The abolitionist ladies, as they were known, wrote papers, organized clubs and exclusively female abolitionist societies, participated in joint with men in mixed societies and clubs, freed slaves, showing a protagonism hitherto little broadcast in the Brazilian historiography.
