RACIAL AND ETHNIC DISCOURSES IN PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE TEACHING TEXTBOOK: PROBLEMATIZING COLONIALITIES
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this paper, we problematize image discourses of a 6th grade (elementary school) Portuguese Language textbook unit (OLIVEIRA et al., 2015), in order to question colonialities of being, knowledge and power represented under ethnic-racial aspects. Methodologically, we rely on documentary research, in order to interpret the semioses present in the textbook that can make social identities (in)visible in that way. In dialogue with interdisciplinary studies focused on ethnic-racial issues, from a decolonial perspective, we present possibilities of confronting aspects inherent to hegemonic epistemes. In the analyzed unit, we noticed, both in verbal and non-verbal texts, silencing and erasing of ethnic-racial identities. This condition contributes to the legitimation of colonial representations and discourses instantiated in society, especially those that make such identities invisible, reinforcing prejudices and ethnic-racial stereotypes.
