BLACK SOCIABILITIES FROM LEISURE TO LITERACY: A LITERARY AND RECREATIONAL CLUB IN THE CAMPOS GERAIS REGION (PR
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article presents how literacy appears in the practices of black sociabilities as a social insertion strategy and how institutions may have been responsible for promoting literacy. The article focuses on the Literary and Recreational Club - 13 de Maio, founded in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, in 1890. The reflections about the aforementioned club are based on the research carried out by Santos (2016), and begin with a brief presentation of the club and a social-historical contextualization. The article also discusses how black clubs, especially in the south of Brazil, in the period immediately following the abolition of slavery produced heterogeneous groups, with distinct functions, but with some common links. The term “literary”, present in the name of the club from Ponta Grossa, is discussed in order to demonstrate how it could be understood as a possible space for promoting literacy as it happened in some Black Brotherhoods and other clubs.
