Abstract
The aim of this article is to discuss the history of absences, progress and challenges in school education in quilombolas communities from the region of Vale do Ribeira, State of São Paulo. We will analyze the quilombos located in the Eldorado City, specifically a group of 7 territories located in the micro-region. The methodology consists in historical and bibliographical analysis, based on research about the region. The central idea of this article is to discuss how the quilombola social movement, even amid the obstacles posed by the different governmental spheres, has demanded the implementation of state policies, especially education, which is our focus here.
