Abstract

This article is the result of research that examines the lines of black and mixed race candidates, participants of the examiner board of phenotype, in a public state institution of higher education in the Midwest Region in the context of the implementation of Lei nº 12.711 of 29 August 2012, which provides for reservation of seats for blacks, mixed race and indigenous people in federal universities and federal institutions of technical education in middle-level. Although provided by law the criterion of self-declaration, the adoption of examiner board of phenotype is not prohibited and represents a rights protection mechanism. Partial and provisional results show that access of black and mixed race by racial quotas can be a strategy to question and subvert the white hegemony, to reframe and strengthen black identity. It was found that the existence of examiner board constitutes a mechanism that shy away the erroneous or fraudulent interpretation of ethnic-racial belonging. It also set up a space for dialogue with the candidates, to point out that the conflicts presented by them to affirm themselves as black or mixed, is the result of a process of denial and invisibility of the black population in Brazil.
